Before we breed, we test our dog's health. We test the hips, elbows and patellas via x-ray. We also have a certified ophthalmologist check eyes for issues. The heart and thyroid are other tests that are recommended. We send some results to the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) for certification. Posting some results in the public allows you to have a glimpse into our health testing practices. Health testing is time consuming and expensive. Leave the hassle to us! If you decide to take a puppy from us, you know what you're getting. Visit www.ofa.org for more information.
We use Embark Veterinary, Inc. and the UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory for our DNA evaluations. We breed dogs who are 100% Unaffected by 165 Genetic Diseases, including those that are common in the Coton De Tulear. The Coton De Tulear is a healthy breed with few issues that are not widespread, as long as breeders act responsibly. If you're considering another breeder, ask what health testing their dogs have been submitted to, and request proof. Only accept a puppy from a responsible breeder.
Our dogs are registered with the United Kennel Club (UKC) because we love their Code of Ethics! In our experience, Coton De Tulear breeders who choose UKC registration are breeders of excellence. UKC recognizes Classy Cotons as guardians of quality and health for the Coton De Tulear, and the best resource for a purebred Coton De Tulear. UKC advises that prospective dog owners obtain a puppy only from a breeder like Classy Cotons, who follow responsible breeding practices. Classy Cotons is bound by UKC Breeder's Code of Ethics, https://www.ukcdogs.com/breeders-code-of-ethics

NuVet Plus supports the immune system for puppies, adults, seniors, and for life! If you want one of our pups, plan to use the vitamin for at least two years to improve the immune system and protect your pooch!
"The OFA created the Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) by partnering with participating parent clubs to research and maintain information on the health issues prevalent in specific breeds. [They've] established a recommended protocol for breed-specific health screenings. Dogs tested in accordance with that protocol are recognized with a CHIC number and certification." (OFA.org)
OFA recognizes the more information stored and accessible in these databases, the better it will be for every breed, so OFA encourages all breeders to attain CHIC Certification. Classy Cotons wholeheartedly agrees with this approach and participates to the fullest extent.
OFA issues the CHIC Certification if a dog achieves screening for every disease recommended by the parent club for that breed and those results are publicly available in the database.
Classy Coton's Stud, Snowy River's "KING KOLOA KOLOHE" is CHIC Certified!
King Koloa Kolohe's OFA Certifications are available here:
What does this mean for you?
It's a good indicator Classy Cotons responsibly factors good health into their selection criteria.
"For buyers, the CHIC program provides accurate information about the results of a breeder’s health testing. For diseases that are limited to phenotypic evaluations, there are no guarantees. However, the probability that an animal will develop an inherited disease is reduced when its ancestry has tested normal. Further, as more DNA tests become available and the results are entered, the OFA database will be able to establish whether progeny will be clear, carriers, or affected."
"For everyone interested in canine health issues, the OFA database, and specifically those dogs that have achieved CHIC Certification, are tools to monitor disease prevalence and measure progress."

The Coton De Tulear is such a fascinating breed!
The Coton De Tulear is hypoallergenic & has a long topcoat that is usually white. The coat is more like hair instead of fur and requires frequent, regular maintenance. They have little to no shedding which means your home is cleaner!
The average life span is around 15 years. Proper diet and exercise will benefit your dog for years to come!
The dogs can range in size but are generally small, weighing between 8 and 15 lbs.
Great temperament and the curious nature make the Coton De Tulear a true gem! After the growth plates are healed, usually age one, the Coton enjoys walking, running, chasing a ball, chasing a friend, being chased, boating, swimming, playing and all types of agility and training. This breed is truly adaptable!
This breed can be easily trained (with your effort and consistency), and is a very good companion dog. Are you interested in a pet that will follow you from room to room? The Coton De Tulear is PERFECT!
People have rumored this breed difficult to house break. If you take your time and effort to train your dog, the Coton De Tulear will respond favorably. Our puppies are potty-training from around six weeks of age. This doesn't mean less work for you but it does mean they don't like urine or feces in their "den". Teach your dog that your home is their den and they will respond.
Rest assured, the puppies are safely born and raised inside our pest-free, smoke-free, and clean home that is mostly tile with some carpeted rooms. They sleep directly next to my bed in an bacteria and dirt resistant, FDA approved HDPE plastic whelping box called the Plaza MagnaBox by Lakeside, which is one of the first steps we take to protect your puppy from unwanted illnesses. After their eyes open and they can tolerate some activity, they are moved to the living room during the day so they can begin socializing around noises and other dogs. The puppy area is always clean so the puppies will be easier to potty train, as well as healthy. The puppies are held by children and adults (men and women), as well as introduced to various activities and noises, including scary situations like an umbrella, a dropped plate, someone wearing a coat, and more! They are provided with many types of toys and invitations to chewing. When age appropriate, they get supervised playtime in our protected yard.
Each puppy will be crate trained for their safety and comfort. The crate is never a place to send a punished dog. The crate is the dog's personal den. The crate is used for sleeping and a safe environment if you need to leave for short periods throughout the day. When you bring your puppy home, the crate (also referred to as a kennel) is an excellent tool for potty training.
Please don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions. There's far too much information to list in one place. Also, if we have a wait list don't hesitate to reach out, because occasionally someone falls off the list (puppies are big responsibilities!). We are currently accepting applications and deposits for available puppies upcoming litters.
